Navy personnel arrested for shooting at fishing vessel released on bail

September 12, 2019   05:17 pm

The 12 naval personnel, who were recently arrested and ordered remanded by the Trincomalee Magistrate in connection with opening fire on a fishing vessel in the seas off Kokkilai, have been granted bail.

The naval personnel, including two officers, were arrested on September 10 and had been remanded until September 16 by the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court.

However, they were ordered released on bail today following a motion filed by the Sri Lanka Navy.

A patrol boat of the Sri Lanka Navy during a routine patrol in the seas area off Kokkilai in the night on August 28 had observed a suspicious vessel and later signaled the boat to stop.

However, due to the boat failing to heed their orders and continuing to press on, the navy personnel had opened fire at the suspicious boat.
