The main CSR initiative of TV Derana, Manusath Derana today (07) carried out a campaign to clean garbage dumped on the roads leading to sacred Sri Pada, for the second consecutive year.
Sri Pada, which is celebrated as a world heritage site by the UNESCO, is an internationally acclaimed biodiversity hotspot.
However, due to polythene and plastic waste dumped by thousands of pilgrims who visit the sacred site each year, the sensitive ecozones in the range are faced with a serious threat.
Taking into account the current situation, Manusath Derana launched a programme to clean the historic site of Sri Pada, with the objective of educating devotees and making the area garbage-free.
Accordingly, a group of contributors along with the “Manusath Derana team had been engaged in the cleaning process since the 5th of March.
The campaign was officially launched at 7.00 am this morning following religious observances.
The main roads leading to the sacred Sri Pada, namely the Hatton-Nallathanniya trail, Kuruwita-Erathna trail and Ratnapura-Palabaddala trail, were cleaned of garbage accumulated on the roadside with the help of various parties including Sri Lanka Army, the Police, students of University of Kelaniya, environmental and private organizations.
The collected garbage was subsequently handed in for recycling to the Maskeliya, Kuruwita and Ratnapura Pradeshiya Sabhas.
The devotees too joined the cleaning process, by collecting the waste in sacks provided by the Manusath Derana team.
