Budget 2021: Single-use polythene, plastic usage to be banned from 2021

Finance Minister, PM Mahinda Rajapaksa has proposed to ban the usage of single-use polythene and plastics with effect from the 1st of January 2021.
Presenting the budget proposal to the Parliament today (17), he said the government has observed the need to reduce the effects to the environment through single-use polythene and plastics.
Recycling of plastics needs to be made mandatory in order to promote the usage of glass, eco-friendly, health appropriate and degradable material, he said further.
Banning of single-use polythene and plastics will ensure the management of waste in an environmentally sensitive manner, PM Rajapaksa added.
