Following the arrest of former Sri Lanka Army chief and
Chief of Defence Staff General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka last night (Feb. 08),
his wife Anoma Fonseka briefed the media this morning at their residence at
Queen’s Road in
Ms. Fonseka said that her husband was taken away by army personnel last night at around 9.30 and that she was at present unaware of her husband’s whereabouts. General Fonseka fought the Tigers for almost 30 years and was this the way he is being treated now, asked his distraught wife.
Ms. Anoma Fonseka said that her husband was still under medication after the suicide bomb attack near the Army Headquarters and she was worried of her husband’s health.
She said that she always thought that the army was a disciplined force but she regretted the way they took her husband away. What happened to her family might happen to others in the future, she said.
When a media person inquired whether she knew where her husband was taken to, she said she did not know his whereabouts. They expected something like this to happen but not in this way, she lamented.
Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) Director General Lakshman Hulugalle last night told the media that General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka was taken into custody by the Military Police.
Mr. Hulugalle said that General Fonseka was arrested for discussing with certain sections of the Opposition, conspiring to topple the government and also for creating divisions within the Sri Lanka Army while he was its Commander and also when he was the Chief of Defence Staff.
The retired General is to face a Court Martial where evidence against him will be produced, Mr. Hulugalle told the media.
