Swan goes to Elephant for General Elections

February 20, 2010   05:05 pm

The New Democratic Front (NDF) of the ‘Swan’ through which retired General Sarath Fonseka contested the Presidential poll will this time round contest in alliance with the United National Party (UNP) under the ‘Elephant’ symbol, the NDF General Secretary told Adaderana a short while ago.

When Adaderana called Ms. Shamila Perera, the General Secretary of the NDF, she said that they were not lending the Swan symbol to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) which is contesting under a new alliance, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) with Gen. Fonseka as its leader and the Trophy as its symbol.

Ms. Perera said that her party with the Swan symbol would contest in alliance with the UNP at the April 8 General Elections.

Meanwhile, reports state that former Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva has thrown his weight behind the DNA and that former cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga too would opt to contest under the Trophy.
