A bizarre and unfortunate incident where a woman died after being stung by an ant was reported from Dambulla today. According to the husband, the woman had been sleeping and a ‘Dala Kadiya’ queen ant (of the Odontomachus simillimus species) had stung her.

Consequently she had been admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she died while receiving treatment.

According to hospital sources two more persons had been admitted to hospital after being stung by the same species of ants and are still receiving treatment.

Doctors advised the public to be wary of ant bites especially if such bites caused allergic reactions.
