Saukyadana Movement founder’s funeral on Monday

The funeral of the Saukyadana Movement of Sri Lanka’s founder and Director General Dr. Vajiranath Lakshman De Silva will be held on Monday, June 21.

 

 

Born on July 18, 1929, Dr. Vajiranath Lakshman De Silva obtained his MBBS from the Medical Faculty of the Colombo University and later a DPM on community health from the University of London.

 

 

As a young doctor in 1959, while on a pilgrimage cum orchid search to Sri Pada, he noticed the difficulties the pilgrims underwent along the trek and decided to set up a voluntary first aid and medical unit to assist them. This was the foundation for the Saukyadana Movement of Sri Lanka being established in March 1960. The movement provides free first aid during major events and functions island-wide.

 

 

For his community services Dr. De Silva was honoured with the international Albert Switzer award in the year 2000 and several local awards.

 

 

He leaves his wife Nalina and children Pradeepa, Chandu, Prassana (Hawaii) and Ruvanal (USA).

 

 

Dr. Vajiranath Lakshman De Silva’s cortege will leave his residence at 117, Uyana Road, Lunawa, Moratuwa at 2.30 pm, for cremation at the Rawathawatte Cemeteryat 3.00 pm on Monday June 21.
