Jaffna peninsula to be mine free by September

De-mining operations will be completed in the Jaffna peninsula by September this year, says Security Forces Commander, Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe. Baring Muhamalai, the entire peninsula is expected to be mine free, according the Jaffna Commander.


Most of the areas along the northern railway line have been cleared of land mines and other improvised explosives devices set up by the Tigers, Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe said. He added that 73,689 persons have been resettled within the peninsula. Another 2,332 persons from 699 families are yet to be resettled, he added.


Meanwhile, the United States of America has come forward to assist Sri Lanka in the de-mining activities in the North.
