A major project to plant 10 million trees was launched this morning (Oct. 14) in celebration of the 18th anniversary of Sri Lanka’s premium television channel TV Derana.
The project, themed “Magen Gasak Mavu Deranata” (A tree for Mother Earth from Me”), is carried out by Manusath Derana, the CSR arm of TV Derana.
The live broadcast of the program commenced at 7:30 a.m.
TV Derana, in celebration of its previous anniversaries, had implemented a number of CSR projects including ‘One Million Trees’ project, the Little Hearts program, ‘Derana Daruwo’ scholarship program and the Manusath Derana initiative to create awareness of and raise funds for those who are affected by kidney diseases.
The massive tree-planting campaign ‘One Million Trees’ project was set in motion under several phases in 2018 in celebration of the 13th anniversary of TV Derana. The project was completed on a successful note with the millionth tree being planted by ‘Sindu’ the elephant at the Ridi Viharaya in Kurunegala on March 15, 2019.
Now, as the second phase of this tree-planting campaign, TV Derana has kicked off the ‘Ten Million Trees’ project countrywide.
Marking the launch of the project, the chairman of Derana Media Network Dilith Jayaweera, joined by State Minister Sisira Jayakody, planted a tree near the Kadawatha Interchange of the Outer Circular Highway.
Concurrently, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, much venerated Maha Sangha and other religious leaders, Sri Lanka Army and schoolchildren joined hands with TV Derana by planting trees.

On October 11, 2005, TV Derana stepped into the world of media with the promise of bringing innovative television to Sri Lankan viewers while staying true to its brand credo of “protecting indigenous values while protecting our future”.
Confined to the Western Province back then, TV Derana today is a complete network consisting of FM Derana, Ada Derana Web and Manusath Derana.
TV Derana has so far introduced many talents to the country via its reality shows Little Star, Derana Dream Star, Derana 60 Plus and Derana City of Dance.
Not only did TV Derana produce many artists, but through Derana Music Video Awards and Derana Film Awards, it also recognized the contribution of such artists in the field of arts. TV Derana also hosts the Sri Lankan of the Year Awards to acknowledge personalities who have made an invaluable contribution to the country in various fields.
A great many awards won by TV Derana’s news brand Ada Derana also bear witness to the credibility of the news provided as well as the love showered upon it by the people in the country.
Further, TV Derana’s YouTube channel also made history recently by becoming the first and only TV channel in the country to reach 4 million subscribers, which is a testament how well the channel has been embraced by the country’s audiences.
TV Derana’s humanitarian arm Manusath Derana is known for the social service it provides to the people of the country when they need it the most.
