Customs seizes ‘Hashish’ worth over Rs. 61mn sent from Italy

Sri Lanka Customs has impounded a large consignment of ‘Hashish, weighing just over 4kg, sent from Italy.

Contraband was found inside a parcel that was declared as food items and addressed to a location in Homagama.

The parcel was seized by the officers of Customs’ Revenue Task Force Directorate at the office of Serendib Cargo Services on Tuesday evening (Jan.02).

In the meantime, the agent who came to clear the parcel from the Customs was placed under arrest.

The arrestee and the seized items were subsequently handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) for further investigations.

According to the Customs spokesperson, Senior Customs Director Seevali Arukgoda, the estimated value of the ‘Hashish’ consignment stands at Rs. 61.36 million. ‘Hashish’ is a concentrated form of cannabis.

Sri Lanka Customs says, over the course of 2023, it has impounded foiled 8 attempts to smuggle narcotics into the country and impounded contraband worth Rs. 359 million.
