Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s member Nayana Wasalathilake is tipped to fill the parliamentary seat which fell vacant following the resignation of Badulla District MP Chaminda Wijesiri.

Wasalathilake, who secured 31,307 votes in the 2020 General Election from the Badulla District, is next in line on SJB’s preferential vote list.

Shortly after the first parliamentary session of 2024 kicked off this morning (Jan.09), Wijesiri told the House that he would step down as a Member of Parliament.

Later, the Communications Department of the Parliament confirmed that Wijesiri had handed in his resignation to the Secretary-General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera following the announcement made earlier.

Thus, pursuant to Section 64(1) of Parliamentary Elections Act No.01 of 1981, the Secretary-General will inform the Election Commission’s chairman that Wijesiri’s parliamentary seat remains vacant.
