The ten civil society activists, who were taken into police custody on Wednesday (Jan. 31) while staging a ‘Satyagraha’ campaign in front of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), have been granted bail.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has issued this order, after the arrested individuals were produced before the court this afternoon (Fe. 01).

The relevant civil society activists were arrested while protesting in front of the CID last evening, demanding that Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella be arrested over his alleged involvement in the controversial import of substandard medicines.

Rambukwella was due to appear before the CID yesterday, however had failed to do so on account of having to appear before the Colombo High Court over another case. Thus, the Minister had requested the CID for a different date, Ada Derana learns.

Meanwhile, the Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr. Saman Ratnakaye was also summoned before the CID last evening to record a statement on the matter.
