Tuition teacher arrested in Kandy for photographing, sharing O/L English paper

A tuition class teacher has been arrested over the incident of allegedly photographing the English Language question paper of the 2023 (2024) G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination and sharing it on WhatsApp during the exam recently.

Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department have apprehended the suspect in Kandy this morning (12).

Preliminary Investigations have revealed that the relevant WhatsApp group consists of 1,025 members.

The English Language question paper for the G.C.E. O/L exam was held on May 09 and according to the schedule, the question paper was distributed among the students at 8.30 a.m. However, police said that the teacher in question had photographed and released the paper to the WhatsApp group at around 9.11 a.m. the same day.

The arrested teacher will be produced before the court today.

Against this backdrop, the Commissioner General of Examinations Mr. H.J.M.C. Amith Jayasundara stated that although a few incidents of irregularities were reported during the ongoing 2023 G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, no ‘question paper leak’ has taken place.

Speaking to the media on Friday (10), the Exams chief pointed out that the confidentiality of a question paper is considered to be within the first half hour after the commencement of the examination.

He further assured that there are no reports of any circulation of the question papers before the examination, as per the facts received by him thus far.

The 2023 (2024) G.C.E. O/L examination, which commenced on 06 May will be held until 15 May 2024.
