The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to publish the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill in the government gazette and thereafter submit it to the Parliament for approval.

The approval had been granted at the cabinet meeting held on 29.04.2024 to amend the Penal Code to prohibit corporal punishment in any form or whatsoever and compile the appropriate laws in that respect.

Accordingly, the clearance of the Attorney General has been received for the draft prepared by the legal draftsman, the Department of Government Information (DGI) said.

Thus, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms to publish the said bill in the Gazette and thereafter submit it to the Parliament for approval.
