Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi appointed to Anura’s MP seat

The Election Commission has gazetted the name of Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi to fill the vacancy created in parliament following the election of Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the 9th executive President of Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi has been appointed to the Parliament as a Colombo District MP of the National People’s Power (NPP).
He was next on the preference list for the district in 2020 General Elections after Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Earlier today (23), the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera had informed the Chairman of the Election Commission in writing that Anura Kumara Dissanayake informed her under his hand that he has resigned from his seat in Parliament with effect from today, since he has assumed duties as the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The Secretary General has further stated in her letter that this notification has been made in terms of Section 64 (1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 1 of 1981 as amended by the Elections (Special Provisions) Act No. 35 of 1988, that a vacancy has occurred in the membership of the Ninth Parliament terms of the Article 66(c) of the Constitution.
