Airport employee arrested for stealing items from passengers’ luggage at BIA

The Airport Police have arrested an airport employee who had allegedly opened the luggage of passengers arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake and stole items from them.

The suspect, an employee in the baggage handling section, had reportedly secretly entered the storage area where the passenger luggage of a flight that arrived at the airport from Malaysia on September 23. 

CCTV cameras had reportedly captured him opening luggage belonging to passengers and stealing items from inside of them. 

The arrest was made after investigative officers from the airport had observed the camera footage and reported the suspect to the Katunayake Airport Police.

The Katunayake Airport had received complaints about missing items from passengers’ luggage for some time, and due to their vigilance, the employee was apprehended.

Katunayake Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
