The officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) have arrested a deputy commissioner of the Eastern Provincial Department of Revenue for accepting a bribe of Rs. 200,000.
According to the commission, the raid was carried out following a complaint made by a resident of Chenkaladi, Batticaloa regarding the matter.
The complaint was made after the resident purchased a 65-perch plot of land in the Sathurukondan area of Batticaloa for Rs. 10 million and paid Rs. 600,000 as stamp duty.
However, the provincial revenue office has later informed the resident that the assessed value of the land was Rs. 26.5 million.
As a result, the official stated that a government fee of Rs. 850,000, along with a fine, had to be paid. However, a bribe of Rs. 200,000 was allegedly requested to reduce this amount to Rs. 200,000.
The deputy commissioner has been arrested while accepting the relevant bribe at the Eastern Province Department of Revenue’s office in Batticaloa.
The Bribery Commission said that the suspect will be produced before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court.
