2024 General Election: Maximum spending limit for candidates announced

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has issued a circular stipulating the maximum spending limit allowed for each candidate for campaigning purposes during the 2024 General Election.
Accordingly, the maximum expenditure limit allowed for candidates, parties, independent groups and national list candidates have been stipulated based on the district.
All upcoming national elections will be subject to new campaign finance laws that will limit the amount of funding that candidates, political parties and independent groups can spend on their campaigns.
Ahead of the 2024 presidential election which was held is September, the Election Commission had met with various stakeholders to brief them on the legislation and obtain their views and suggestions on establishing the spending limit and how to move forward in implementing the laws.
The parties must submit expenditure reports to the Elections Commission within 21 days of the election results being declared, the notification stated.
November 14, 2024 has been fixed as the date for the election of the new Members of Parliament, while the postal voting for the parliamentary election will be held on October 30, November 01 and 04 at all District Secretariats and election offices.
