Five fatalities reported in separate road accidents

Five people have reportedly died in separate road accidents across various areas of Sri Lanka over the past 24 hours, according to police. 

The incidents occurred in Pitigala, Moragahahena, Hikkaduwa, Baduraliya, and Katupotha.

In the early hours yesterday (12), on the Pitigala-Elpitiya road in Amugoda, a motorcycle traveling toward Elpitiya collided with the rear of a bicycle traveling in the same direction. Both the cyclist and motorcyclist sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Elpitiya Hospital. 

The cyclist, a 68-year-old resident of Amugoda, Pitigala, succumbed to his injuries after being transferred to Karapitiya Hospital.

Another accident occurred last morning in Gonapala, Moragahahena, on the Colombo-Horana road. A lorry heading toward Colombo collided with a three-wheeler turning onto a side road. 

The driver of the three-wheeler, along with a woman and two children in the back seat, sustained serious injuries. 

The woman, a 34-year-old resident of Kudagalara, Middeniya, succumbed to her injuries upon admission to Wethara District Hospital. The other injured passengers were transferred to Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila for further treatment.

In Hikkaduwa, a lorry traveling toward Galle collided with a cyclist from behind in the Dodanduwa area on the Galle-Colombo road.

The cyclist, a 71-year-old resident of Berathuduwa, Pahalagedara, was seriously injured and later succumbed to his injuries at Karapitiya Hospital. The lorry driver has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Later that evening, in the Kosgulana area of the Baduraliya-Mathugama route, a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus collided with an oncoming motorcycle. 

The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old resident of Kosgulana, Molkawa, succumbed to his injuries after being transferred from Bulathsinghala Hospital to Horana Base Hospital. The bus driver was subsequently arrested.

Lastly, a pedestrian was fatally injured after being struck by a van in Katumuluwa, Katupotha.

The victim, a 63-year-old resident of Bandara Koswatta, Kahavitiya, succumbed to his injuries. The van driver has also been arrested.

The van driver has been arrested in connection with the incident.
