PM Harini tops Colombo District preference votes; sets new record

The much-awaited preferential vote results of the Colombo District in the 2024 General Election have been released with NPP candidate Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya polling the highest number of preference votes and placing first in the district.

 

She has received an unprecedented 655,289 votes in total and in doing so has set a new record for the most preference votes received by a candidate in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary election history. 
 
Prior to this, the record for the highest number of preference votes obtained by a parliamentary candidate was held by former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who polled 527,364 votes in the 2020 General Election contesting from the Kurunegala District. 

 

SJB leader Sajith Premadasa is placed second in the Colombo District preference votes list in the 2024 General Election with 145,611 votes while fellow party members Dr. Harsha De Silva, Mujibur Rahman and S.M. Marikkar have also secured seats from the district.
