The five member Supreme Court bench rejected the petition filed by Sarath Fonseka regarding the Presidential Election. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition by upholding on a preliminary objection raised on behalf of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Sarath Fonseka who filed the election petition while in detention at the Navy Headquarters had asked the Supreme Court to order the Election Commissioner and his staff to re-count the ballots cast at the January 26 Presidential election and that it be done in the presence of the petitioner and the other 21 candidates or their authorized representatives.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday(25) filed objections against the election petition filed by Presidential candidate, Sarath Fonseka challenging the election of Rajapaksa as the President for the second term.
Filing the written submission before the Supreme Court, President Rajapaksa claimed that there was no basis for Fonseka’s petition and said there was no evidence to prove the alleged election violence and malpractices.
