Elon Musk’s Starlink launches satellite internet in Sri Lanka

Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service is now officially available in Sri Lanka, its owner and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk confirmed in a tweet on Wednesday.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Musk announced, “Starlink now available in Sri Lanka!”, marking the official launch of the service in the country.

He also shared a post by Starlink’s official account which showed a Sri Lanka map with all regions covered and marked ‘available’.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) had granted a “Telecommunications Service Provider” license to Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited on 14 August 2024, authorizing the company to offer satellite-based internet services across the island.

Starlink’s satellite internet is significantly faster than existing fibre-optic internet services in Sri Lanka and offers the major advantage of global accessibility, including in remote and underserved areas where conventional infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

With this launch, Sri Lanka has become the third country in South Asia -- and another of India’s neighbours -- after Bhutan and Bangladesh to get access to Starlink’s internet services.

Starlink is also getting closer to launching its services in India.

Starlink provides internet through a network of satellites orbiting Earth. The company currently operates the world’s largest constellation of satellites, with more than 6,750 in orbit.

According to the company, Starlink offers fast internet with low delay, making it suitable even for remote areas with limited connectivity.

In Asia, Starlink services are already available in several countries, including Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, and Azerbaijan.

Globally, it serves users in over 100 countries, offering both residential and roaming internet plans.

The residential plans are usually offered in two categories: Residential Lite for smaller households with lower data needs, and Residential for larger families or heavier usage.
