Measures will be taken to facilitate the payment of spot fines issued by Police for traffic violations through the use of GovPay application from September, Harsha Purasinghe, a board member of the Information and Communication Technology Agency stated.
He made this revelation while addressing a media briefing in Colombo.
Accordingly, it has been confirmed the launch of the new Online Traffic Fine Payment System from September.
Harsha Purasinghe noted that the ICTA has made considerable progress on the online traffic fine payment system, a real-time traffic fine issuance and payment system.
It was launched as a pilot in April 2025 across selected police divisions, and the system has already processed 461 digital transactions, collecting over Rs. 739,500.
Harsha Purasinghe confirmed that the Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to the project and they are hoping to commence the island-wide rollout starting this month.
He said they will introduce the system under the first phase by the end of this month, connecting police stations in two provinces — the Western and Southern Provinces.
The ICTA is hoping to fast-track the project subsequently and rollout the system nationwide by September, connecting all police stations, enabling local payment of fines, Harsha Purasinghe noted.
Since its official launch on February 7, 2025, GovPay has rapidly scaled across the public sector.
As of today, the platform has successfully onboarded over 50 government organisations, enabling around 700 active government services to be paid digitally.
GovPay has processed 7024 transactions, collecting a total of Rs. 65.62 million in government revenue via seamless, secure digital payments, according to the Information and Communication Technology Agency.
