SL-BAN: Galle Test ends in draw

The first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium ended in a draw on Saturday.

 

This is the first draw at this venue after nearly 12 years and 26 Tests.

 

Set with a target of 296 in the fourth innings, the hosts eventually scored 72/4 in 32 overs before both teams agreed for a draw with 5 more overs still left to play in the day. 

 

For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam picked up 3 wickets in the innings along with the one of Angelo Mathews who played his last innings in Test cricket. Nayeem Hasan picked up the other wicket. 

 

Earlier, the visitors set a mammoth target of 296 in 37 overs after declaring on 285/6 where skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto became the first Bangladeshi captain to score twin tons in both innings of a Test match.

 

Shanto eventually remained unbeaten on 125. 

 

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh scored 495 in their first innings thanks to centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim and Shanto. Sri Lanka replied with 485 after Pathum Nissanka’s 187.
