The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has decided not to amend the existing electricity tariffs for this quarter.

The announcement in this regard was made today (14) by the Chairman of the PUCSL, Prof. K. P. L. Chandralal during a media briefing held in Colombo.

The Chairman of the PUCSL noted that following public consultations and review of electricity calculation methodologies, a decision was taken not to increase tariffs for the next three months.

Chairman Chandralal confirmed the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) requested a 6.8% increase in the electricity tariff, due to various other expenses.

He said “What we believed was that, in line with the past periods, some form of adjustment needed to be made according to the established procedure. We refer to this as an income-expenditure alignment.”

Prof. K. P. L. Chandralal added, “The issue here is that, in the past, decisions on electricity tariffs were made once every six months. Now, we are in a situation where such decisions need to be made quarterly. For this quarter, an adjustment should have been made based on the profits or losses of the past three quarters. However, the commission decided that combining the results of three quarters into one adjustment was not appropriate.”
