Three Indian nationals have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with 50kg of ‘Kush cannabis’.

The stock of narcotics valued at Rs. 500 million has been seized by Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit officers.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 31, arrived at 11:07 a.m. on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 403 from Bangkok, Thailand.

According to preliminary investigations by customs officers, drug traffickers had promised to provide the group with a Bangkok trip to smuggle the consignment.

It was further revealed that the drugs were concealed in 48 packages, each weighing over 1.1 kg, hidden inside three travel bags, totaling approximately 50 kg of Kush cannabis.

The seized drugs and the three Indian nationals have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Division at the Katunayake Airport for further investigation.

Previously, the largest drug seizure at the BIA was reported on Vesak Poya day last year, when a British national was apprehended with 46kg of Kush cannabis.
