Education reforms related to Grade 6 deferred to 2027 - Cabinet Spokesman

A decision has been taken to defer the implementation of the proposed education reforms related to Grade 6 until 2027, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has stated.

The decision was taken during yesterday’s Cabinet meeting held under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The Minister noted that considering the issues surrounding the Grade 6 English module and several other matters, the government has decided to not to implement the proposed education reforms concerning Grade 6 students this year.

Minister Jayatissa added that, based on the findings of the investigation report conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Ministry of Education regarding the controversial Grade 6 English module, the Academic Affairs Board of the National Institute of Education is expected to take disciplinary action against the officials responsible for the incident.

Accordingly, the Minister noted that the relevant education reforms will continue to be implemented in future based on the following five main pillars:

1. Human resource development

2. Infrastructure development and administrative reforms

3. Assessment and evaluation processes

4. Curriculum development

5. Public awareness and promotion

However, reforms proposed for Grade 1 students will be implemented as planned this year, Minister Jayatissa added.
