The Hambantota District Ceylon Teachers’ Association has strongly condemned a request from the Zonal Education Office of Tangalle seeking an explanation for teachers’ absence from a recent meeting held in Tangalle.
Speaking to media, the District Secretary of the Association, Suranga Chinthaka stated that the zonal office has no authority to act in this manner.
Suranga Chinthaka emphasized that calling teachers to attend on a Sunday was entirely impractical.
He added, “It was impossible to summon teachers on a Sunday, which is why we strongly condemn this action. We will continue to involve teachers in awareness and decision-making processes. Teachers were the driving force, working tirelessly to bring about a new era. Yet today, the first blow is being felt by the very teachers themselves.”
The Zonal Education Office of Tangalle requested an explanation regarding the absence of teachers at a meeting held on March 15 at the Tangalle Urban Council, which was chaired by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
In this regard, the Zonal Director of Education of Tangalle has sent a letter to all school principals.
Accordingly, reasons for not attending the relevant meeting must be submitted by today (26).
