Referring to the news item by a certain sections of the foreign media claiming that Rizana Nafeek is ‘poised to be executed by beheading’, Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Dilan Perera said that it is not new as the court sentence has been already given but temporarily suspended.

“This death sentence is not new. It was given a long time back. But due to our and international appeals, the death sentence has been suspended. Our attempts are still ongoing to save her life through a pardon,” Dilan Perera told Adaderana when contacted.

“This news may be new to a section who is trying to play up the issue by renewing an old news story while Sri Lanka is being criticized by certain international groups and activists. They should not play with people’s lives. We are still engaged in attempts to obtain a pardon and are in contact with our missions and the Saudi Arabian government. There is no truth of an immediate carrying out of the death sentence on Rizana” Mr. Perera added.
