A tense situation has risen in the Nawatkuda area in Batticaloa today (August 13) following the capturing and assault of a ‘suspicious’ individual by residents in the area. Army personnel had intervened and dispersed the mob while they had been attacking the individual, alleged to be a “grease devil”.
According to Ada Derana reporter in the area the tense situation had erupted due to the involvement of army officers to control the situation.
The populace had set fire to tires on the road to express their disapproval while army personnel have been stationed in the area as a security measure.
The assaulted individual has been handed over to the Kattankudy Police who subsequently produced him before the Batticaloa Magistrate. He is to be held in remand custody till August 23.
