Voters given to eat, drink at Temple Trees: UNP complains to EC

It has now become a custom of the government, after dates for the election are fixed, to bring voters as various groups to Temple Trees and treat them to food and beverages, accuses UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake.

At this instance where the Local Government election has reached it third phase that custom is being “grandly” exercised, he states.

In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Elections, highlighting alleged violations of election laws by the ruling UPFA, the Parliamentarian claims that the government is not only abusing state property and resources, but state officials as well are being used for election propaganda activities.

He states that such occasions have been pointed out to the Election Commissioner’s office and the Parliament on several prior occasions.

Inviting voters to Temple Trees and treating them to food and beverages is a clear election law violation, Mr. Attanayake affirmed.

“However the regrettable situation is such that so far no legal actions have been taken regarding violations of election laws.”

He further requested the Elections Commissioner to take utmost measures against such acts as they could inflict damage on the country’s democratic structure.
