Workers alone not to blame for collision; trains from India ‘unsuitable’

Definitive assumptions cannot be made regarding the train accident in Alawwa until the committee appointed to look into the incident submits its report, General Manager of Railways B.A.P. Ariyaratne said.

He pointed out that certain factions are expressing various theories over the mishap.

Mr.Ariyaratne, however added, that it would take several more days before the report of the committee is submitted.
 
Meanwhile the Organization for the Protection of the Railway Properties and the Rights of Railway Employees requests from the Transport Minister to refrain from putting the blame of the accident only on the workers.

The convener of the Organization, Sumathipala Manawadu says it is essential to conduct a fair investigation into the incident.

He claimed that even though committees had been appointed to investigate previous railway accidents, their reports were never made public.

Speaking to Ada Derana regarding the train collision which occurred near the Alawwa railway station on September 17 Mr. Manawadu stated that as trade union they had on several occasions expressed disapproval to the decision to import trains from India, criticizing from its finish to technical issues.

“The unsuitable condition of these Indian trains has been revealed clearly from this accident.” he expressed.

He also requested from the Transport Minister to carryout an accurate inquiry in order to unravel the real situation behind the accident.
