SC orders annulment of 2011 A/L Z-score calculation

The Supreme Court today ordered the University Grants Commission (UGC) to annul z-score calculation for 2011 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination and to recalculate for old and new syllabus separately, Ada Derana reporter said.

The judgment was delivered by Supreme Court bench chaired by Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake on the Fundamental Rights petition filed by a group of A/L students and the Ceylon Teachers’ Union against the formulation of the Z-Score for the 2011 A/L examination.

The Supreme Court acknowledged that current Z-score calculation method has caused grave injustice to students who sat for the examination under old and new syllabuses.

However, court did not welcome the request by the petitioners seeking the annulment of complete 2011 A/L examination results and only ordered that the annulment of z-score calculation.

The petitioners challenged the method used for calculating the Z-score for the examination claiming that both syllabuses should be considered separate in calculating the Z-score, the basis of which students are enrolled into universities.
