The United National Party (UNP) today accused the government of attempting to fulfill its own private agendas due to the shortcomings of the constitution.
The Impeachment Motion against the Chief Justice, Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, is the best example for this, UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said.
He stated that it is evident by the fact that the same parliamentarians who brought forth the motion will participate in the Parliamentary Select Committee which will probe the matter, that there is a fault in the interpretation of the constitution.
The Kandy District MP further stated that the motion of impeachment proceeding should be investigated before the international community and local scholars.
Speaking at a press briefing today, Kiriella pointed out that it has become an issue of international significance due to the agreements made by the government, highlighting that it was also taken up during the UN’s Universal Periodic Review of Sri Lanka in Geneva.
The parliamentarian, however, added that he would back any action taken by attorneys and judges associations regarding the matter.
