Health Ministry looks into ‘red rain’

The Ministry of Health today said that steps have been taken to conduct tests on samples of red rain experienced in certain parts of the island. The samples rainwater have been forwarded to the Industrial Technology Institute of Sri Lanka laboratory tests, the ministry said.

The ministry assumes that a form of algae or germ may have caused the change in the color of the rainwater.

However, relevant tests will determine the exact cause for the red rain, the Health Ministry stated.

Rare red showers were reported on November 14 from Sevenagala area and on November 15 from Moneragala and Manampitiya areas in the southeastern parts of the island.
