The people have the right to know whether the money used for launching Sri Lanka’s first satellite was from the Maha Raja’s fund or LTTE funds, UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera stated.

He said that even though the satellite launch was publicized in the country as Sri Lanka’s first satellite, the Chinese media has only revealed it to be China’s 18thsatellite launch. He stated that only one Chinese media channel stated that a small portion of the technology used for the satellite launch was purchased by a Sri Lankan company.

Speaking at a press conference held in Colombo today (November 29), the MP stated that you cannot rent out a corner of a room in a house and claim that the house belongs to you adding that the government is trying to fool the people with misinformation.

MP Samaraweera claimed that while the people are suffering in hunger, the Rajapaksa family is more involved in showing them the stars without addressing the actual problems of the people.

He added that the government responded to the public needs by waiving taxes off racing cars which he said was similar to when the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette told the people to eat cake if they couldn’t get bread during the time of the French Revolution.

The UNP Parliamentarian also added that the tragic stories of poverty and abandonment which were heard in countries like Somalia and Ethiopia are now being heard in Sri Lanka as well.
