VIDEO: Sri Lanka could lose C’wealth membership over impeachment – Ranil

The prevailing issue of Chief Justice Dr Shirani Bandaranayake will not end with just her removal, but also with Sri Lanka losing its Commonwealth membership, says Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe.

As a country which has accepted Commonwealth principles, the government is faced with the question of whether it will continue to comply with those principles or not, he said.

The government therefore needs to give emphasis to the issue pertaining the country’s top judge and decide whether it will re-conduct an impartial investigation on the matter, he said speaking at a public seminar titled ‘People’s Sovereignty and Human Rights’ organized by the Platform for Freedom in Colombo today (10) to mark the 64th International Human Rights Day..

The UNP leader further claimed that the report compiled by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on the impeachment of the Chief Justice has a good prospect of entering the Guinness Book of World Records, as the report prepared within the shortest time frame.

Pointed out that opposition members of the PSC had withdrawn from proceedings before the report was completed, he stated that if the report does receive a prize for setting a Guinness Record a portion should be provided to the opposition members too.

Wickramasinghe further declared that the probe on the Chief Justice was not an impartial inquire by any means.
