
Russia is to enhance its support to Sri Lanka in the New Year in many fields including trade, energy, economic and socials sectors. Accordingly a Russian nuclear power team with scientists will arrive in January to study Sri Lanka’s energy sector outlook.
Russia is the single largest buyer of Sri Lanka tea, and trade between both countries topped 360 Million U.S.Dollars in 2011 which was an increase by 34% in comparison to the year 2010.
There is a strong presence of Sri Lankans in many top Russian education institutions while almost 21,000 Russian tourists visited Sri Lanka this year, the Government Information Department reported.
Russia is the topmost pure Ceylon tea buyer in the world. In 2011, more than 54,200 metric tons of pure Ceylon tea was purchased by the Russian Federation, amounting to 251.08 million US Dollars.
