Suicides decline in 2012 - police

There has been a decrease in incidents of suicide in the year 2012 compared to the previous year, according to Police Headquarters data which show 3,871 suicides in 2011 reducing to 2,704 the following year.
A total of 2,939 males and 832 females had committed suicide in 2011 compared to the 2,092 males and 612 females who took their own lives in 2012.
A majority of suicides were committed by consuming pesticides and self-strangulation, the Police Headquarters said, adding, a highest number of cases were reported from Anuradhapura and Ratnapura districts.
