The body of a 75-year-old Colombo-based businessman, who reportedly died of a heart attack in Thondi, Ramanathapuram district three days ago, was exhumed on Saturday after his second wife alleged foul play in his death.

Hyther Ali, a native of Thondi, had two wives- the first one lived in SS Colony in Madurai, India and the second in Colombo.

According to police, Ali had come to Thondi last week to visit his daughter. He suffered a fatal heart attack on Wednesday while at her house and was buried on the same day in SS Colony in Madurai where his first wife Nainar Siddiqa Beevi and other relatives lived.

Meanwhile, the Madurai City Police Commissioner and Thondi Police received a letter from the Sri Lankan High Commission requesting an enquiry on Ali’s death after it received a complaint from Ummu Salma, his second wife in Colombo, who claimed that he had not died of natural causes.

After police exhumed the body, forensic experts from Government Rajaji Hospital conducted the autopsy.

“We would send the postmortem report to the Police Commissioner, Thondi police and the Sri Lanka High Commission. Then the investigation will be conducted on the basis of the autopsy report,” said inspector Ramesh of Thondi Police.

The Thondi police registered a case under section 174 (suspicious death) of CRPC and section 176 (omission to give notice or information to public servant by person legally bound to give it) of IPC. – Express News Service
