MP Thilanga Sumathipala says that the leadership of Sri Lanka Cricket is “anxiously waiting” for his return and that they all believe a change in the system and administration of the game is urgently needed.

“They all believe we are in a time where we need to have a change in terms of domestic cricket, international cricket, administration, finance and development – all five pillars,” he told Ada Derana in an exclusive interview.

The Member of Parliament, who has announced his candidacy for the position of SLC president for next month’s election, stated that the matter was discussed among the membership and that they are all of the view that the former president “should come back and put the game back on track”.

“At least for a short period of time – 2 to 3 years and this can take off the ground,” he said.

Sumathipala has been SLC president three times from 1997 to 2004. He also contested for the position last year, but withdrew from the race, allowing Upali Dharmadasa to win the election uncontested.

The Colombo District parliamentarian said that this time around most of the member clubs and districts have proposed his name. “More than 50% of the membership has already proposed by name for me to come forward and hold office,” he said.

Sumathipala further said that he is “quite confidant” of winning this year’s election and that there is “no doubt whatsoever”.

“Sri Lanka Cricket needs me. I love to be back and perform as president of Sri Lanka Cricket,” he said.

Sumathipala stated that he is looking forward for to making sure Sri Lanka has a champion team, a world-beating side and also to take the game to a different level.

Incumbent president Upali Dharmadasa has also handed in nominations for the election, slated to be held in March end. Over 300 officials of the SLC affiliated clubs and district associations representatives hold voting rights.
