India’s Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jayanthi Natarajan hinted that India would wait for tabling of the draft resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) before taking a decision.

Asked whether the country India would support the draft resolution, she said, “first, let it be tabled.”

“We have strongly condemned the Sri Lanka’s action last year. We have supported the American resolution that was adopted. That shows our intention” she told reporters on Friday after chairing the meeting 8{+t}{+h}National Meet of state Biodiversity Boards.

While rejecting the accusation that the Centre had failed to take any firm steps to prevent Tamil fishermen from being attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy, she said that the Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu had made several representations to the Government to take strong action against the Sri Lankan Navy for this act.

“It is not a State issue. It is a national issue. India has held diplomatic-level talks in connection with the issue,” she said.

Ms Natarajan said that India was firm on taking a strong action, and appealed to other political parties not to politicize the issue.

“The Prime Minister has made a categorical statement in Parliament and has sent his representative to hold talks with the Sri Lankan President,” Ms. Natarajan said. – The Hindu
