The Buddhist monk who was assaulted in India spoke to Ada Derana about his ordeal stating that the assailants had shouted ‘Lanka’ before beating him at a train station in Chennai where he had been with a friend.
He said that he had not suffered any serious injuries in the attack and would return to the island today (March 19) from the Maha Bodhi Viharaya where he sought refuge following the assault. The monk who is attached to a temple in Kandy stated that he did not want to make public his name.
The Ceylon Workers Congress meanwhile has requested the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu State government to put an end to the attacks on Buddhist monks and other devotees who engage in pilgrimages.
A group of Sri Lankan tourists including a Sri Lankan monk were attacked by three unidentified persons at Central railway station yesterday, Indian media reported. The incident happened when the 16 tourists alighted from Tamil Nadu Express that reached the city from New Delhi.
The video telecast on Tamil Nadu media clearly show the faces of the attackers however Indian Railway Police says that ,”a video footage is available but it may be difficult to trace them because the men were wearing caps,” Times of India reports.
