
Forty-four persons suspected of attempting to illegally travel to Australia have been arrested near the Kaluwamodara Bridge in Aluthgama this morning.
The suspects, including 5 women and 4 children, were arrested at around 2.00am today (19) inside a vehicle, police said.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka Navy intercepted 61 persons illegally bound for Australia in a multi-day trawler off Vakarai.
The trawler named “Madushan II” was intercepted by a Sri Lanka Navy’s Fast Naval Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command.
Navy said that 8 women and 10 children were among the arrested persons and that they were brought to Trincomalee Harbour to be handed over to the Police for further investigations.
