Shantha Sisira Kumara, UNP member of the Wayambe Provincial Council, has been arrested by Chilaw Police on charges of unlawful assembly and civil disorder during a protest last night against the hike in electricity tariffs.
The protest was organized in the Chilaw Town by UNP parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara, Ada Derana reporter said.
The protestors holding flaming torches were preparing to leave following their protest demonstration, which lasted several minutes, when a group led by the Provincial Councilor stormed the venue and attacked Range Bandara’s vehicle.
The UNP MP lodged a complaint with the Madampe Police stating that the attack had caused over Rs 100,000 in damages to his vehicle.
Madampe Police had handed over investigations into the case to Chilaw Police as the incident had taken place under latter’s jurisdiction.
Acting on this complaint, UNP Provincial Councilor Shantha Sisira Kumarawas arrested and is expected to be produced at the Chialw District Court.
