The JVP today accused the ruling government of handing over the country’s higher education to a ‘thug’ of a minister, who looks at students like a “jailer looking at prisoners”.

He is a minister with ‘privatization’ in his head, said Central Committee Member of the JVP Bimal Ratnayake, adding, that Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake has turned the Sabaragamuwa University into a torture chamber.

Condemning the attack on the students’ protest at the Sabaragamuwa University yesterday, he stated that the government had used its “political police” and groups who had arrived in Air Force vehicles to attack the students.

Ratnayake stated that nine students were arrested during the protest and that five of them were hospitalized due to injuries from police attacks. “But the student hunt is still not over,” he told reporters today.

The former Parliamentarian alleged that the government has suspended over 1,000 students during the past 3 years and has completely destroyed university education.

He stated that while students, who are demanding for their right to sit for exams, are being attacked, the Embilipitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman who assaulted two police officers in Ratnapura is still roaming free.
