While one section of society is under immense pressure another section is leading an extremely luxurious life, by robbing public funds, stealing national treasures and violating all existing laws in the country, says UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya.

He stated that those individuals are living in a different world and are drunk on state power.

He stated that public funds are being wasted without any cause or inquiry and that large scale investment projects undertaken by the government including the Mattala Airport and Hambantota Harbour, have ended in failure.

The Gampaha District MP stated that four state-owned institutions are responsible for 95% of the losses incurred by the state sector, namely the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Mihin Air and SriLankan Airlines.

“The government is spending money as if it’s their family inheritance,” he told reporters in Colombo today.

Accusing the government of having no feelings towards public funds, Jayasuriya stated that unnecessary state expenditure in soaring and that excessive amounts are spent on foreign tours and extravagant ceremonies.

He also charged that new Sri Lankan embassies are being opened in various countries unnecessarily. “There is no need to open embassies in each and every African and Asian nation.”

Jayasuriya stated that top posts at these embassies are given to either “relatives or good friends” and that experienced diplomats are almost never appointed.

Money spent on such wasteful acts could have been utilized to fix the country’s unprotected railway crossings and fund the healthcare sector.

He stated that the President is providing development funds to certain countries during his visits, like extremely wealthy nations in the world, but in the end the burden will fall on innocent masses.

The parliamentarian added that numerous economic experts observing Sri Lanka have warned that the country would face a grave economic crisis, if there is no immediate financial discipline in the government.
