Govt buying out UNP MPs to uplift its waning popularity – Tissa

The government has become bankrupt to such an extent that it has to spend millions of rupees to purchase parliamentarians and carry out election campaigns, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said today.

If the government can win by popularity, why is it poaching for UNP MPs for its election campaign, he inquired. “Does this not clearly show the bankruptcy of the government?”

He also charged that the government is attempting to mentally hinder the UNP’s election campaign by taking opposition MPs to their side.

The government can spend millions of rupees, give away posts and privileges and even use media to criticize, but the UNP cannot be toppled, he said, addressing a public meeting in Polonnaruwa.

Attanayake claimed that the government has now been rejected by the people and that they are engaging in a process of enlisting opposition MPs in order to mentally uplift SLFP voters who don’t visit polling stations.

The UNP MP further said that several Ministers had met him in Parliament and conceded that the government’s popularity is slowly waning.
