VIDEO: UNPers joined govt to fulfill personal goals, not serve public - Perera

UNP Western Provincial Councilor Srinath Perera says that every UNP politician who crossed over to the government did so with the sole intention of fulfilling their personal objectives and not to do justice to the masses or strengthening the country’s administration.

He claimed that some UNP members left the party because they had “internal revenue issues” while others were indebted large sums of money after investing in the stock market and therefore needed financial aid from the government to resolve their woes.

He stated that some politicians even needed to escape from ongoing court cases filed against them.

Perera reiterated that none of them had the best interest of the people or the country when they decided to cross over to the government.

The Western Provincial Council member and President’s Counsel said he believes that former MP Dayasiri Jayasekara’s decision to join the government was also influenced the necessity to fulfill his own goals and not to better serve the people.

He stated that the government’s popularity is slowly decreasing and that it is facing uncertainty over the result of the upcoming election. Dayasiri chose this moment in order to rescue the government from the situation and strengthen it, he told reporters today.

He inquired from Dayasiri, who criticized the lack of democracy within the UNP before resigning, whether he went to a government which has “five star” democracy.

The Provincial Councilor further said that country’s law has been completely destroyed and that almost every day the media reports of government politicians breaking the law.

“The government is now attempting to blame all this on the Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha chairman and the police and save itself,” he charged.

Perera claimed that the local politicians charged with crime did not act on their own and that they had received the protection of powerful government politicians. He further claimed that the government is attempting to blame everything on former DIG Vaas Gunwardena.

“Can a DIG take authority into his own hands and act like that in the country,” he inquired, while alleging that individuals with strong political power are behind these crimes.
