Opposition Leader Ranil Wickraasinghe today said that political advantages should not be sought when speaking on the incident which had taken place in Rathupaswala, Weliweriya.
The UNP leader delivered a special statement in parliament today regarding the Weliweriya clash, in response to a statement by the Leader of the House, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management had claimed that angry protestors had hurled petrol bombs at the army and had attempted to create a calamity of immense proportions by setting things on fire.
Ranil Wickramasinghe urged the government to refrain from making statements for political gains by claiming that the public threw petrol bombs and to conduct a proper investigation regarding what actually happened.
Wickramasinghe further said that when several persons among those attacked had called him personally he had heard the sound of gunshots in the background and called for a probe into who ordered this and the arbitrary acts by some officers.
